SolarWinds NPM, SNMP, and VMware ESXi 4.1 or 5

Hello,

   I am a new SolarWinds admin and I have been asked by our management to make use of the SNMP Contact and Location fields in my alerts.

   So this has been working fine until I ran into our VMware vSphere ESXi 4.1 and 5.0 nodes. These nodes were not reporting Contact or Location data. So my VMware guy and I spent the day reading various forums and blogs, making changes to our ESXi lab environment. After more than 8 hours of two IT guy’s head scratching, I decided to ask the question here.

  Has anyone gotten VMware vSphere ESXi 4.1 or ESXi 5.0 to successfully populate the SNMP collected Contact and Location fields? If so, how did you go about it?

Thanks for any help you can provide

It would be good to know for future knowledge

Cisco 3850 reporting incorrect temperatures

Hi!!

I have two stacks of Cisco 3850's and both of them are reporting that the temperature is around 4 degrees Celsius.  I have had both Solarwinds Support and Cisco Support look at this.

We did a SNMPWALK to check the MIB's and they seem correct, but when it comes to posting the temperatures in NPM, they are way off.

The switches say they are a happy 25 degrees Celsius.  That I can beleive becasue my closet is at a comfortable temerature.

Our Internet Cisco router is showing no interface errors, but Orion is showing interface transmit discard errors in the thousands. Shouldn't the counts match?

Error communicating with the Orion server after upgrading to NPM 10.3

We are receiving this error since upgrading to NPM 10.3:

There was an error communicating with the Orion server

There was no endpoint listening at net.tcp://orion:17777/orion/core/businesslayer that could accept the message. This is often caused by an incorrect address or SOAP action. See InnerException, if present, for more details.

Help me fix this

  1. Confirm that the SolarWinds Information Service is running.
    • On your local SolarWinds server, click Start > Administrative Tools > Services.
    • Right-click SolarWinds Information Service V3, and then click Start.
  2. Confirm that the SolarWinds Orion Module Engine service is running.
    • On your local SolarWinds server, click Start > Administrative Tools > Services.
    • Right-click SolarWinds Orion Module Engine, and then click Start.
  3. Examine the specific details of the error for environmental hints to help resolve your issue.
  4. Refresh the web console browser.
  5. If still unresolved, click the troubleshooting help links below.
  6. After completing any changes, repeat the same task that generated this error.

SQL actually stopped, but that error has since been fixed leaving us with this. I have followed steps one and two however SolarWinds Information Service (it actually doesn't say V3) and the SolarWinds Orion Module Engine are both running. I have restarted the services, but have not seen a change in behavior. We're kinda at a loss at this point as to the issue so I wanted to hit up the community before submitting a ticket..3

Linux net-snmp memory usage shows Memory used + Cached memory

$

Hi All --

Running Net-SNMP 5.4.1 on a wide range of Solaris and Linux boxes /w NPM 9.1 SP5  monitoring a range of params.

The problem is with the "Physical memory" monitoring.

Linux MemFree includes Cached memory. The cache is typically a filesystem cache where the kernel helpfully places recently read/written files for quick retrieval later.

The issue is on all our Linux boxes that over time [as more and more files are read], Physical memory usage always climbs to 99% [with the kernel helpfully not allocating to the cache about 6megs :)] See attachment. Its the same story for all recent Linux kernels.

This isn't a problem in so far as actual memory usage = MemTotal - Cached, however it basically renders default memory monitoring on NPM useless [and from reading many forum postings, I presume most people just turn it off].

The thing is I want to know/alert if real memory usage gets above say 80%, etc.

# cat /proc/meminfo
MemTotal:      3995632 kB
MemFree:         66236 kB
Buffers:        324112 kB
Cached:        2719860 kB
SwapCached:         68 kB
Active:        2466712 kB
Inactive:      1215628 kB

 free  -m
             total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:          3901       3851         50          0        316       2669
-/+ buffers/cache:        865       3036
Swap:        12001          0      12001

HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrStorageDescr.1 = STRING: Physical memory
HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrStorageDescr.3 = STRING: Virtual memory
HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrStorageDescr.6 = STRING: Memory buffers
HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrStorageDescr.7 = STRING: Cached memory
HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrStorageDescr.8 = STRING: Shared memory
HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrStorageDescr.10 = STRING: Swap space

HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrStorageSize.1 = INTEGER: 3995632
HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrStorageSize.3 = INTEGER: 16285348
HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrStorageSize.6 = INTEGER: 324052
HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrStorageSize.7 = INTEGER: 2750756
HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrStorageSize.8 = INTEGER: 0
HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrStorageSize.10 = INTEGER: 12289716

The free shows both views, including and excluding the cache/buffers.

Essentially I would like to graph/monitor the (MemTotal - (MemFree-Buffers)), or in OID talk, (hrStorageSize.1 - hrStorageDescr.7)

So I spose to my question.   Can I modify the query to do some maths, and remove the cache from the calculation that will monitor the Free Memory?

Cheers, Johhny.

Hello Community,

Can someone please take a look at the following trigger and let me know why it won't work. Its based on Universal Device Poller.

mib.PNG

The result of the Universal Device Poller is as follows:

You can see the result is 'Healthy'. Therefore, that is the condition I'm looking for - but it won't work.

Any help will be greatly appreciated...

What We're Working On: New Alerting Engine

Welcome to Web-Based Alerting

Those of you following our flurry of beta announcements for NPM v12 may have noticed a long requested feature make an appearance- Web Based Alerting

We didn't just move alerting to the web however, what you'll see in the beta is a new alerting engine written from the from the ground-up. We've retained much of the flow and styling of the previous alert manager, so you'll feel right at home with the new interface.

While there is more goodness on the horizon for alerting (stay tuned to NPM beta announcements) we wanted to take a few minutes to go over some of the exciting new features. Without further ado:

Manage Alerts in the Web

One look at the new "Manage Alerts" grid tells you this isn't just a port of the old Advanced Alert Manager to the web:

Manage_alerts.png

Notice the "Action Manager" tab? Actions may now be edited independently from Alerts. Perform bulk edits, Test / Simulate actions, import / export / etc:

Action_Manager.png

Right from the first alert-creation screen, you will notice some new functionality:

Alert_properties.png

That's right - alert severity and custom properties. Imagine all the fun you can have with a new set of CPs.

Expect to see more fun things on the "Trigger Conditions" page, but the big new feature you'll see in beta is the ability to build conditions off of multiple object types:

9-16-2014 2-28-08 PM.png

Want to combine nodes and applications in an alert? Done.

Our Time-of-Day scheduler is improved in the beta as well:

9-16-2014 2-31-53 PM.png

Are you currently creating multiple alerts for different time ranges? No more.

New / improved alert actions are starting to surface in the beta as well:

9-16-2014 2-35-08 PM.png

You may notice the addition of "Change Custom Property" action. Need to flag something out of service, or change a CP for evaluation in another alert? The possibilities are endless:

9-16-2014 2-38-05 PM.png

If you happen to configure a "Play Sound" or "Text to Speech" action, you may notice an option to download a new "Desktop Notification Tool":

9-16-2014 2-40-11 PM.png

Not only will the tool play sounds / speech on your local machine / NOC system based on alerts, but has the ability to ACK as well.

9-16-2014 2-42-05 PM.png

Email actions also now have "Secondary SMTP server" option for redundancy:

9-16-2014 2-44-50 PM.png

Finally, before you submit the new alert definition, the beta will give you a sanity check to make sure you're not about to spam your entire team:

9-16-2014 2-45-55 PM.png

More exciting alerting improvements to come. If you're interested in staying on top of the action, get involved with our beta program. Details and link may be found here: NPM 12.0 Beta3 Now Available

Not ready for that sort of commitment?

We'd love to hear your thoughts below.

SNMP v3 - need help with credentials

$

I have looked through the Admin guide and the often referenced Cisco doc on SNMP v3.  I have gone through the many posts on it as well.  So I am starting to think I am doing something uniquely dumb.

Below is my Cisco switch config, I know there is some overlap on the views but I just kept getting broader to try and fix the problem.  In NPM it says credentials fail, however when I use the SNMP Tester tool in the engineer toolset I get a more specific error.

ERROR:   SNMPv3 - Unsupported Security Level - Either the requested MIB is not readable for this username, or this username requires a higher level of authentication / encryption.

Cisco SNMP config:

snmp-server group GROUPNAME v3 auth read view_all write view_all access 6

snmp-server view view_all iso included

snmp-server view view_all internet included

snmp-server view view_all system included

snmp-server view view_all interfaces included

snmp-server view view_all chassis included

snmp-server community public RO 5

snmp-server host 10.27.28.5 public

The last 2 lines are there so I can still monitor the switch while i figure this out.

I used this to config the user:

snmp-user USERNAME GROUPNAME v3 auth md5 PASSWORD access 6

Help please!
